A Case Study: Decarbonizing Plastic Production

Introducing Biopure™: Making plastic infinitely recyclable.

Removing oil from polyester

Today, plastic production relies on fossil fuels as feedstock, resulting in a depletion of Earth’s resources. Polyester, one of the more common types of plastic, has an annual production volume of over 90 million tons and is one of the leading causes of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Protein Evolution developed the U.S.’s first biological recycling technology to enable plastic production from waste, not fossil fuels.

The result is recycled plastic that makes a low-carbon, circular plastics economy possible.

The most common form of polyester, known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is the starting point for various consumer products, ranging from t-shirts to water bottles.

Most polyester is not recycled today

It's estimated that 91% of plastic waste enters landfills, incinerators, or the environment. The remaining 9% or so of recycled plastic waste is often downcycled, with the resulting material having diminished properties.

This abundant waste is even more significant in the fashion industry, where it's estimated that less than 1% of clothes are recycled into new garments.

THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR UP TO 10% OF GLOBAL CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS — MORE THAN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS AND SHIPPING COMBINED.

Our plastic reality

National Consumer Survey BY Protein Evolution  & Wakefield Research  2023

69% of Americans do not recognize that crude oil is used to produce plastic products, including textiles.

70% of clothing is made with polyester or other plastic-derived fabric.

PLASTIC SOUP FOUNDATION

98% of Americans overestimate the amount of plastic recycled and reused each year.

99% of plastic is made from chemicals sourced from fossil fuels.

CENTER OF INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW

We’re taking the world closer to net zero

Protein Evolution’s BiopureTM technology is transforming plastic recycling and production to bring a lower-carbon plastics economy to life.

These ingredients are terephthalic acid (PTA) and mono-ethylene glycol (MEG), which can be converted into 100% recycled polyester: an indistinguishable product from oil-derived polyester but with a far lower carbon footprint.
